No Points Allowed (2012-1014)

Wrestling, a sport of strength, imagination and aggression, is arguably one of the most difficult and least celebrated. I am moved by the dedication, austerity and loneliness of the sport: one man against one man, each alone in the struggle, with nothing else but his inner resources. It is a primal sport, intuitive and ancient.

I want to paint the physicality of the male body as a way to reveal the materiality of paint: to create mass and weight, to describe the beautiful, brutal, yet balletic movements that suggest the foreignness of the male world. I love the inherent magic of the surface of the canvas; I want space and illusion and painting to exist together, moving from narrative to abstraction, from revelation to unintelligibility.

Unlike wrestling, there is no absolute confirmation of excellence in painting; there is no ultimate achievement, only flickering moments of lonely satisfaction amidst constant struggle and doubt.
